Akita

About the Breed

The Akita is a large and powerful dog breed originating in Japan, known for its strength, loyalty, and intelligence. Its distinct look sets it apart from other breeds: it has a broad face, small eyes, and a thick double coat that protects it from the elements. But the Akita is more than just its impressive physique: with the right training and socialization, this breed can make an excellent companion. Temperament The Akita is an independent thinker with a strong will who requires firm but gentle guidance. It has been bred to be loyal to its owners and protective of them if well-socialized, the Akita can make a great family pet. They are known for being loving yet aloof with strangers but always willing to please their owners. Ideal Owners Due to their independent nature and size (males may reach up to 28 inches tall), the Akita is best suited for experienced owners who understand how to motivate them while respecting their autonomy. They may not be ideal for first-time owners or those living in apartments; instead they require plenty of space where they can get regular exercise (both physical and mental) as well as time spent with their humans. History The Akita originated in Japan where it was used primarily as a hunting dog in the mountainous regions of northern Japan since at least 1600s AD; however there are records of similar dogs existing much earlier than that in China and even further back in ancient cultures like those from Siberia. In 1931 the Japanese government declared the Akita an official national treasure due to its unique appearance and character traits this honor was extended further when two American servicemen brought back two puppies from Japan after World War II which were then used to establish breeding programs outside of Asia. Healthy Weight & Health Checks A healthy weight range for an adult male or female Akita ranges between 75-120 pounds depending on its height at withers (the highest point on its shoulder blades). The breed should be checked regularly by qualified veterinarians for any signs of health problems including hip dysplasia, eye issues like progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), as well as ear infections which are common due to their thick fur around their ears that traps moisture easily if not kept clean regularly. Additionally regular heartworm prevention should also be administered by your vet as these parasites can cause serious health problems if left untreated over time. With its distinctive looks, strong willed personality, intelligence, loyalty and protective nature theres no doubt that owning an Akita requires commitment but it also brings plenty of rewards too! With proper training from an experienced owner plus regular veterinary check ups any prospective owner can rest assured knowing theyve made a good decision when deciding on this beautiful breed!
