Chihuahua (Smooth)

About the Breed

The Chihuahua (Smooth) is a small and alert breed with a long lifespan and big personality. This unique dog has been around since the 19th century and is known for being loyal and loving companions. While they make excellent house pets, they require plenty of mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. History The Chihuahua has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. They originate from Mexico, where they were bred as companion animals for wealthy families. The breed is thought to be descended from the Techichi, an ancient breed of dog kept by the Toltec civilization in Central America over 2,000 years ago. The Chihuahua was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904 and is still popular today due to its small size, long lifespan, and affectionate nature. Temperament The Chihuahua is an intelligent breed that loves spending time with its owners. They are very loyal dogs who will bond quickly with their family members but can be shy around strangers until they get used to them. They may bark at unfamiliar people or other animals but are generally gentle dogs who respond well to positive reinforcement training methods such as clicker training or reward-based training methods. Chihuahuas are also very energetic dogs who need plenty of exercise everyday to stay happy and healthy. Ideal Owners Due to their size and energy levels, the Chihuahua makes an excellent companion for seniors or those living in apartments or smaller homes without access to a yard or large outdoor area for exercise purposes. They are also ideal for families with older children who can handle them gently while playing games such as fetch or tug-of-war. However, its important that children understand how delicate these dogs can be so they know how to interact safely with them at all times. Healthy Weight & Important Health Checks Chihuahuas should weigh between 2 - 6 lbs depending on their age so its important that owners ensure their pet maintains a healthy weight throughout its life span as obesity can lead to serious health issues later on down the line such as heart disease or joint problems due arthritis affecting mobility over time. Its also important that owners take their pet for regular vet checks every 6 months in order detect any potential health issues before they become serious problems requiring more intensive treatment options later down the line. These health checks should include blood tests, urine samples, physical examinations, x-rays, vaccinations etc depending on your pets age/lifestyle etc. The Chihuahua (Smooth) makes an ideal companion for seniors or those living in apartments due its small size and affectionate nature. With proper care, nutrition & exercise this active yet gentle breed can live up 10 16 years. Its important that owners take their pet for regular vet checkups every 6 months & maintain a healthy weight throughout its life span in order keep this lovable pooch happy & healthy till old age creeps up!
