Dogo Argentino

About the Breed

The Dogo Argentino is an impressive, large white dog of the mastiff family. A loyal, brave and protective breed, the Dogo Argentino is a formidable guardian who makes a great companion for those who understand their particular needs. Temperament Known for its loyal and protective nature, the Dogo Argentino is an excellent guard and companion dog. They are very affectionate with family members and typically reserved but friendly with strangers. This breed can be quite territorial and aggressive towards other dogs or animals if not properly socialized from a young age. Ideal Owners The Dogo Argentino is best suited to experienced owners who understand how to be firm but fair in their training methods. This breed requires an extraordinary amount of socialization and training when young in order to prevent them from becoming too territorial or aggressive as they get older. As they are very strong-willed dogs, they require consistent leadership and discipline throughout their life in order to remain obedient companions. History This ancient Argentine hunting dog was developed by brothers Antonio Nores Martinez and Agustin Nores Martinez in 1928 with the intention of creating a big game hunter that would be brave enough to take on wild boars without flinching. The brothers crossed several breeds together over time including the Great Pyrenees, Spanish Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Boxer and Pointer amongst others to develop this unique breed that we know today as the Dogo Argentino. Healthy Weight The average healthy weight for a male Dogo Argentino ranges between 80-100 pounds while females tend to range between 70-90 pounds depending on size variation within certain bloodlines of this breed. Its important not to let your Dogo become overweight as it can lead to serious health problems such as joint issues due to excess strain on their bones and muscles caused by carrying extra weight on their frame which can shorten their lifespan significantly if left unchecked or unaddressed over time. Important Health Checks Due to its large size, it is important that owners keep up with regular checkups for this breed in order to ensure that any underlying health issues are addressed quickly before they become serious problems down the line such as hip dysplasia or heart disease which are both common ailments among larger breeds like the Dogo Argentino especially if proper dieting guidelines arent followed religiously throughout its life span. Additionally, owners should also pay close attention during routine physical exams for any signs of skin infections or parasites which may affect this particular breed due its thick coat which can often hide these issues until its too late if left untreated. Overall, the Dogo Argentino is a loyal, brave, protective yet affectionate companion for those prepared for the challenge of owning one. With consistent training, exercise, dieting guidelines plus regular health checks this ancient Argentine hunting dog makes an ideal pet choice provided you have what it takes!
