Pembroke Welsh Corgi

About the Breed

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a unique and loyal breed of dog with an interesting history, and a distinct look. These dogs are known for their intelligence, loyalty, strong herding instincts, and family-friendly personalities. In this article we will discuss the origins of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, characteristics of the breed, who they are ideal for as well as important health checks they should receive. History The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of two breeds of corgi originating in Wales. The other being the Cardigan Welsh Corgi which was bred to herd cows and sheep. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi dates back to at least 1107 when it was first mentioned in writing as a gift given to Henry I by his mother-in-law Lady Margaret Beaufort. It is believed that these dogs were used by farmers to herd cattle and sheep on farms across Wales and England during this time period. Temperament Pembroke Welsh Corgis have been bred over centuries to be smart, loyal companions with an innate herding instinct which makes them great working dogs but also wonderful family pets. They are energetic but can be trained fairly easily due to their intelligence and eagerness to please their owners making them very trainable companions for people looking for an active pet that enjoys spending time with its family members. They do require consistent training from puppyhood so that bad habits dont develop as they age but overall make great pets for those looking for an active companion dog that loves nothing more than spending time with its family members or going on adventures together in nature! Ideal Owner The ideal owner for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi should be someone who has plenty of energy themselves so they can keep up with their pups enthusiasm! These pups love spending time outdoors so having access to a yard or nearby park where they can get plenty of exercise would be ideal but otherwise regular walks or hikes would also suffice if you dont have outdoor space available at home. They are generally quite friendly towards other animals but should always be supervised when around smaller animals such as cats or rabbits due to their strong herding instincts which could potentially lead them astray if not properly supervised! As long as you have the energy and commitment required to provide consistent training from puppyhood then these pups make fantastic companions! Health & Weight Pembroke Welsh Corgis typically weigh between 22 31 pounds depending on gender and height (they are usually 10 12 inches tall). It is important that owners monitor their pups weight closely since obesity can quickly lead to numerous health issues such as arthritis, diabetes, joint issues etc Feeding your corgi high quality food appropriate for their age/activity level helps prevent weight gain in combination with regular exercise throughout life will help maintain healthy weight levels year round! Additionally it is important that owners take note of any changes in behavior such as lethargy or loss of appetite since these could indicate underlying medical problems which need addressed immediately by your vet! Important Health Checks Caring correctly for your corgi starts with regular veterinarian checkups every 6 months - yearly depending on what your vet recommends based off your pup's individual needs/health history etc... During these check ups basic health screenings such as bloodwork should be performed along with checking teeth/gums/ears/eyes etc... Additionally vaccines should also be updated accordingly based off age/breed specific recommendations from your veterinarian - generally all puppies will require more frequent vaccinations than adult dogs due to weaker immune systems so it's important all vaccinations are kept up-to-date throughout life! Finally given the propensity towards hip dysplasia amongst many breeds including corgis it's important all puppies receive hip xrays at some point during life (usually around 1 year) just in case there might already be any signs present before symptoms begin appearing later down the line - catching early indications allows vets take appropriate preventative measures before further damage occurs over time if left untreated! In conclusion while Pembroke Welsh Corgis may look small they certainly pack quite the punch when it comes energy levels making them ideal candidates for homes looking an active four legged companion who loves nothing more than spending quality time outdoors running around or exploring nature together alongside its human friends & family members alike! That being said proper care must still taken ensure optimal health throughout life starting off regularly scheduled vet visits combined with proper nutrition & exercise plus monitoring weight closely helps prevent any potential future medical issues down line while also keeping our furry friends happy & healthy well into old age too :)
