Presa Canario

About the Breed

The Presa Canario, also known as the Canary Mastiff, is a large and powerful breed of dog that was originally bred in the Canary Islands. They are loyal and protective dogs with a natural instinct to guard and protect their family. This makes them an ideal guard dog for many households. Despite their intimidating size, they can be quite gentle if properly socialized and trained from an early age. History The Presa Canario is believed to have been bred by Spanish conquistadors when they arrived in the Canary Islands in the 15th century. They were used as working dogs on farms, herding cattle and protecting livestock from predators such as wolves and wild boar. The breed was also used for hunting and fighting purposes until it was outlawed in 1924. Over time, they became popular throughout Europe as well as Central and South America due to their strength, loyalty, and protective nature. Temperament Presa Canarios are confident, loyal dogs that thrive when given purposeful tasks to do or a job to fulfill such as guarding or protection work. They are naturally territorial but can be socialized to accept strangers if exposed early on so long as proper training is done consistently throughout its life span. Although naturally calm with those it knows well, these dogs may be aggressive towards other animals or strangers if not properly socialized or trained from an early age. They should always be supervised around small children due to their large size and strong jaw strength which could result in injury if not monitored carefully enough. Healthy Weight When fully grown, the average weight of a male Presa Canario should range between 65-90 pounds whereas females typically weigh between 55-75 pounds. It is important for owners of this breed to monitor their food intake carefully so that they stay within this healthy weight range,as obesity can lead to various health issues such as joint problems, heart ailments, and diabetes. Important Health Checks The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends regular health checks for all breeds of dog including several testing methods specific for the Presa Canario breed such as hip dysplasia tests, eye exams, and genetic testing.Hip Dysplasia occurs when there is a malformation within the hip joint which can cause severe arthritis pain over time.Eye exams should be done yearly by an ophthalmologist who will check for any signs of infection or inflammation within the eye itself.Lastly, genetic testing should be done at least once during its lifetime which will give insight into potential issues down the line due to certain genes inherited from its parents. In conclusion, the Presa Canario is an impressive looking canine that makes for a great guardian if socialized correctly from puppyhood. With proper nutrition, regular exercise, and regular health checks this breed has lots of potential when placed in responsible hands. If youre looking for a loyal protector then this might just be your perfect match!
